The Scion brand is probably best-known for its boxy, trendy style, but that will all change with the launch of the new 2013 Scion FR-S, which is pinned as "Bringing the Sport Back to the Car."1 The storied history of the new Scion stems from a fifth generation Toyota Corolla by the name of "AE86," which was offered in model years 1985-1987. The AE86 was a combination of wieldy power and lightweight design, offering a perfect balance of the two. It was a famous off-roading and racing car for many years, and although the new FR-S doesn't share the same parts, it follows in the AE86's footsteps in terms of legacy and passion.
The new FR-S was shown as a concept at the 2011 New York International Auto Show, where it received an astoundingly positive response. FR-S stands for Front engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport and is Scion's definition of a "real" rear-wheel-drive sports car. It achieves near-perfect balance, has an impressive fuel economy, and is a powerful, beautiful machine. While photos and some specs exist online, all rumors should be put to rest in December when it debuts at the Tokyo Auto Show. For now, interested drivers can sign-up to receive e-mails and notifications about the FR-S at (www.frs-scion.com). Drivers can also build their own version of the new Scion, as well as contribute input for Scion to determine official colors and transmission offerings for the new FR-S model.
